Conducting Household Survey on Social Norm and Practices related to Women’s Employment and Gender Based Violence
A group of researchers from Bocconi University, University of Queensland, Save the Children and BRAC are conducting a research on understanding the role of social norm on women’s employment and gender based violence in six districts of Somaliland and Puntland – Hargeisa, Buraco, Erigavo, Badhan, Galkayo and Galdogob. An experimental data collection through community-based group exercises was done in 141 communities from these six districts between November 2018 and March 2019. Through this TOR, the research team is seeking proposals from local constant firms to collect one round of household survey data from 4,230 respondents. A list of the sample respondents will be provided by the research team that includes 30 respondents (15 male and 15 female adults) from each of the 141 communities.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Survey Firm include the following:
(1) Survey design and preparation
a. Field-testing the survey questionnaires (which is developed by the research team) and translate in local language
b. Designing data-entry program with adequate consistency checking
c. Collect permissions from local authorities and letter of supports from the relevant ministry before commencing data collection
(2) Personnel management
a. Ensuring that the enumerator team has adequate male and female members who speak local language and are able collect data by maintaining local customs.
(3) Data Collection
a. Following informed consent procedures for each survey respondent.
b. Conducting interviews with all survey respondents as necessary.
c. Monitoring the consistency and quality of data coming in from survey interviewers on a daily basis, and compiling routine reports on data collection.
d. Deploy data backchecks system and prepare summary of the checks
(4) Data management
a. Developing a robust data entry program with a user-interface in English. This program should generate or assign variable names that correspond clearly and logically to the question labels used in the questionnaire.
b. Entering data in a thorough and accurate manner, and document all cleaning
c. Providing copies of both raw and cleaned datasets in a timely manner.
d. Providing periodic updates to the research team on data entry progress.
e. Ensuring data confidentiality
Survey Instruments
A household survey and a short community survey will be conducted. The household questionnaire shall be about 60 minutes long and to be administered for all 4,230 respondents in all 141 community. In the community survey (one per village; 141 in total), basic information on community characteristics will be collected and should not take more than 20 minutes.
Deliverables
The Survey Firm will produce the following deliverables for this assignment:
a) Roster of recruited enumerators with their corresponding qualifications
b) Field Procedure plan for data collection acceptable to the Research Team, including details on composition of each field survey team.
c) A clean database that has information from household and community surveys in a format readable by common statistical software (e.g., SPSS, Stata) by mid-December.
d) Answer queries that may arise following the delivery of the cleaned data.
