Overview of position
  • IOM is seeking an experienced Civic Education Instructor in the female transition centre in Baidoa. The position will work within the federal govt. of Somalia’s national program for the treatment & handling of disengaged combatants to provide religious counselling to female beneficiaries. The Civic Education Instructor will ensure that beneficiaries receive appropriate civic education to counteract erroneous teachings from their past & instil a sense of civic duty.
  • This position will be under the administrative oversight of the Female Centre Manager, with technical oversight from the Education Coordinator & other relevant technical leads in IOM. Overall contract performance management is jointly monitored & evaluated by IOM & the govt. partner.
Role objectives
The Civic Education Teacher instructs students on important concepts & principles associated with identity & citizenship. To achieve professional success, Civic Teachers must possess strong knowledge of subjects like Somali history. The Teacher should also understand fundamental aspects of teaching, including curricula design & classroom instruction. The Civic Teacher must also have strong communication & interpersonal skills. The Civic Education Instructor will work full time as per Somali labour laws, performing the below duties & responsibilities:
  • Prepare & deliver lessons based on the civic education curriculum.
  • Design activities for students based on different topics / themes from the civic education curriculum.
  • Instil in students an awareness & understanding of current issues & developments in Somalia.
  • Integrate a variety of teaching strategies & curriculum content.
  • Maintain standardised student assessments & record keeping system for student progress & attendance.
  • Assess, monitor, record & report on the learning needs, progress & achievements of students.
  • Work with Social Workers to ensure that student case files are maintained properly & student progress reports are reviewed periodically to reflect individual progress towards goals of graduation.
  • Work with centre staff & govt. counterparts to identify & invite influential guests to provide periodic guest lectures in class & during social cohesion activities.
  • Identify skill gaps for training to tackle current & future problem solving.
  • Provide assessments to beneficiaries learning.
Project reporting

Key competencies Education:
– Bachelor’s Degree in a related field, such as International Development, Political Science, Public Administration, or Public Policy or Diploma in Education.

Experience:
– Experience of working in the South West State of Somalia’s regions is highly preferred.
– At least 2 years of experience in teaching.
– Previous experience working with youth at risk & or the return & reintegration at risk groups a considerable advantage.

Skills:
– Must be able to teach adults with low literacy rate.
– Must have a solid knowledge of Somali history & preferably have a humanities background.
– Experience developing & implementing community based learning projects.
– Excellent organisational, analytical, oral & written communications skills, with keen attention to interpersonal skills & effective communication.

Languages:
– Must be fluent in Somali, Maay & English.
