Assignment Background

Kitchen gardens play an important role in food and nutrition security in agro-pastoral communities. Our program builds and supports community gardens in 6 six communities in Odaweyne, Hargeisa and Gabiley districts. We believe access to locally-grown, chemical-free fruits and vegetables is a right, not a privilege. We aim to encourage the target communities to grow and eat nutrient rich, fresh, and healthy diet.

Summary of Position:

The Community Garden Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the target communities in starting and maintaining community gardens. The Community Garden Coordinator will be under the supervision of the Nutrition Program Manager, who will provide guidance and support. The schedule for this position will be Sunday to Thursday. Work hours will be balanced to ensure it don’t exceed 40 hours in a given week.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as the primary point of contact for community garden centers currently.
  2. Engage discussions with the community to provide spaces to establish community gardens.
  3. Coordinate and facilitate planning meetings to design, build, and maintain the gardens.
  4. Assess the soil, plants, seeds, and products to better understand crop needs and develop more effective and efficient farming practices
  5. Work alongside the target communities to build garden infrastructure.
  6. Assist with the plant sourcing, testing, and selection.
  7. Support the community garden leaders at each site; address their needs in managing the day-to-day gardening activities, including any problems or emergencies that may arise.
  8. Lead – and facilitate regular on-site educational opportunities for community gardeners.
  9. Help in designing methods and tools for the implementation of kitchen garden activities: training, follow-up, community organizations, etc.
  10. Support data collection, data analysis and reporting on community garden activities’ results and main findings.
  11. Conduct site visits at each garden to monitor quality of seedlings and assess plant health.
  12. Anticipate, mitigate and propose solution to problems between the target beneficiaries when it arises.
  13. Conduct regular site visits at each garden to assess plant health.
  14. Work consistently to improve community gardening interventions.
  15. Document community engagement with photos, quotes, etc.
  16. Maintain social media presence by providing photos and materials for ANPPCAN Somaliland blog posts.
  17. Manage time well to ensure that all required tasks are completed within allotted hours.

Qualifications & Skills:

  1. Horticulture or community gardening qualification.
  2. A minimum of 3 years’ experience in regenerative horticulture practices and use of organic gardening techniques.
  3. Significant experience of de signing and building community garden spaces.
  4. Experience with community organizing and community outreach required.
  5. Demonstrated ability to engage with different groups i.e., women, youth, elders, agro-pastoral communities, etc.
  6. Excellent planning and organizational skills, including the ability to plan events.
  7. Ability to teach gardening concepts to a variety of learners.
  8. Some experience in carpentry and/or landscaping.
  9. Ability to work outdoors in all weather (heat, humidity, rain and cold) to do manual labor.
  10. Willingness to work independently and also cooperate as part of a team.
  11. Excellent written and oral communication skills, including public speaking.
  12. Positive attitude; engaging personality.
