Organisational Setting and Reporting

This position is located within the Integrated Office of the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator (DSRSG/RC/HC) in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM). The incumbent reports to the Head of the Integrated Office and is based in Mogadishu.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority and under the direct supervision of the Head of the Integrated Office, the Coordination Officer will carry out the following duties:

  •  Supports and engages in the monitoring and reporting of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework in Somalia; identifies key issues including challenges that require immediate support and advice, takes corrective action as needed and edits materials produced by others.
  •  Maintains relations with UN agencies and directly supports the work of the United Nations Results Groups under the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, in particular as regards to strategies for advocacy and engagement with stakeholders;
  •  Leverages technology and social media networks, and makes informed use of user analytics to expand the reach and availability of information about the work of the Integrated Office and the UN in Somalia.
  •  Drafts routine and ad hoc situation reports/briefings, press releases, media briefs, reports, talking points, newsletters and brochures; organize clearances, production and distribution of information materials.
  •  Monitors, analyses and reports on trends on human and socio-economic rights situation, external aid and public financial management, and in the UN’s evolving programmatic strategies.
  •  Works through the UN Communications Group and closely with communications staff across the UN Mission and AFPs to ensure the DSRSG/RC/HC has a full picture of UN communications planning and events, ensuring UN accounts are consistent, complementary and up to date.
  •  Performs any other assigned duties.

EducationAdvanced University degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) preferably in business administration, management, economics or related field. A first-level University degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work ExperienceA minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in coordinating development activities in national governments and/or at the international level is required.

Previous experience in coordinating development activities in post-conflict countries and/or in international organizations or in support of a field operation of the United Nations Common System or a comparable international organization is desirable.

Experience analyzing political, economic and social challenges and communicating strategic policy and programmatic advice, including to senior leadership, donors and governments, is desirable.

LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language would be an asset.

AssessmentEvaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
