ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) enables governments, empowers people, and strengthens institutions to realize justice and promote peace and sustainable development. IDLO is the only global intergovernmental organization exclusively devoted to promoting the rule of law and access to justice.

With its Headquarters in Rome, Italy, a Branch Office in The Hague, and Permanent Observer Missions to the United Nations in New York and Geneva, IDLO carries out policy advocacy, research, and learning, as well as rule of law and justice programmes in countries through some 17 Country Offices operating in every region of the world.

IDLO IN SOMALIA

IDLO has extensive experience and a good track record of implementing successful rule of law programs in conflict and post-conflict contexts like Somalia. Since 2012, IDLO has been working with government authorities at both the federal and state levels as well as key justice institutions and the informal justice system to enable them to fulfill

their core functions, improve governance and strengthen access to justice for citizens, particularly for the most vulnerable. IDLO is currently implementing five projects in Somalia. IDLO’s activities in the country aim to promote the rule of law in Somalia across a number of areas, including institution building, policy and legal reform, access to justice and human rights, stabilization, and countering violent extremism. In its programmatic work, IDLO has developed a strong partnership with a broad range of Government stakeholders at the Federal level, including the Office of the Presidency, the Office of the Prime Minister, the Financial Reporting Center, the Attorney General’s Office, the Ministry of Justice (among other Ministries), as well as Federal Member States (Puntland, Jubaland, South-West, Hirshabelle, and Galmudug).

THE INTERNSHIP

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Field Program Manager, the Intern will support the implementation of the FRC Support Project and ensure the project is managed efficiently and effectively. The Intern will be asked to support the FRC project with the following duties:

  1. Assist Senior Field Program Manager with the day-to-day project administrative tasks;
  2. Assist in organizing training, workshops, events, conferences, and any other project-related activities/initiatives;
  3. Support in collecting and compiling M&E data as requested;
  4. Maintain and update the project contract and consultant database;
  5. File contractual project documents both in hard and soft copies;
  6. Support the preparation of project bi-weekly sitreps and other materials for the Field Program Managers; and
  7. Perform any other similar duties as assigned by the supervisor.

IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE

Education and Experience

  • Degree in international development, law, public administration, business administration, public policy, or other relevant social sciences.
  • Excellent written and spoken Somali and English.
  • Excellent research skills.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (Ms. Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Excellent work ethic, willingness to work long hours
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and with minimum supervision

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

IDLO provides all full-time interns with a monthly stipend of $300. Internships are offered for 3 months and are renewable up to a maximum of 6 months. Full-time placements (5 days a week) are strongly preferred. Applicants available for less than 3 days a week will not be considered.
