The International Rescue Committee has been working in Somalia since 2006, providing essential services to conflict and disaster affected communities. The IRC has been operational in Central Somalia (Mudug and Galgadud regions) and Mogadishu implementing interventions in the areas of livelihood, WASH, Governance and peacebuilding, GBV, Nutrition, education and health reaching out to more than 200,000 conflict and drought affected people.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure effective functioning of the drug supply system.
  • Keeping accurate records of purchase, requisition and consumption of drugs, medical supplies.
  • Prepare and submit regular inventory reports and requisition orders in time to avoid unnecessary delays in the purchases and delivery of same items.
  • Work closely with the warehouse supervisor assistant for all medical supplies.
  • Ensure the primary health care facility has timely supply of drugs and medical items.
  • Carry out regular supportive supervision in all dispensing units.
  • Raise in timely manner the required regular drug orders as per the consumptions and according to the Essential drug list.
  • Identify the less utilized and short expiry commodities and advise the prescribers accordingly.
  • Ensure continuous review of the essential drug list in reference to WHO and IRC recommended drug list as per the dynamics of the program.
  • Ensure proper storage of all items as their specific storage requirements.
  • Ensure timely issuance of order to various consumption units.
  • Carry out regular pharmacy Quality Audits in all the dispensing units.
  • Furnish the clinicians, prescribers with weekly list of available drugs and advise them on prescribing trends accordingly.
  • Conduct regular check of the wards/OPD drug registers.
  • Advise on any relevant Pharmaceutical issue when called upon to do so.

HUMAN RESOURCES :

  • Directly supervise Pharmacy Assistants/ drug dispensers
  • Routinely monitor staff performance according to their job description and provide written feedback in a timely manner.
  • Participate in continuing education for staff.
  • Ensure continuous mentoring and capacity building of staff, to ensure proper understanding and adherence to pharmacy guidelines

REPORTING AND COORDINATION:

  • Prepare and submit regular inventory reports and requisition orders in time to avoid unnecessary delays in the purchases and delivery of same items.
  • Monitoring drug consumption rates and making sure accurate records of the same are well kept.

KEY RESULTS:

  • A well functioning and effective drug supply system
  • Verifiable and accurate documentation.
  • Processing of monthly drug consumption reports.
  • Timely processing of Trimester orders as per the Essential drug list.
  • Supervision of department staff
  • Continuous mentoring and capacity building of pharmacy staff

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology, preferably with Technical knowledge in drug supply chain management systems and quality assurance
  2. Registered by the relevant and credible body and in possession of current practicing license in Somalia
  3. Minimum three (3) years working experience in a Hospital/health facility set-up.

REQUIRED COMPETENCES:

  • Good pharmaceutical knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to write clear, concise reports and well developed communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, inter-personal, writing, and communication skills required.
  • Good computer skills (Complete MS Office package and any database management and analysis).
  • Must be a team player, flexible and culturally sensitive.
  • Ready to work in difficult environmental conditions with displaced communities.
  • Ability to accept the possibility of insecurity in the project areas and obey security rules and standard operating procedures.
