ANPPCAN SOMALILAND is a Pan-African Child Rights Organization. ANPPCAN Somaliland was founded in 2008 and is headquartered in Hargeisa, Somaliland. We are humanitarian and development organization that promotes children’s rights and gender equality for girls and boys. ANPPCAN SOMALILAND is affiliated with ANPPCAN, a Pan-African child rights organization with headquarter in Nairobi, Kenya.

Assignment Background:

Adequate harvest and post-harvest management are especially important for the production of fruits and vegetables. The assignment is critical toward the overall success of ANPPCAN Somaliland community gardening initiative. The program focuses on the production of nutrient-dense green vegetables.

Summary of Position:

ANPPCAN Somaliland is looking for a short-term consultant. The consultant will work alongside key program staff to develop a standardized, context-specific training package on appropriate methods for processing harvested products and other nutritional practices.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Conduct literature review of existing materials and an appraisal of the available methods for processing harvested products.
2. Develop a standardized, context-specific training package on appropriate methods for processing harvested products and other nutritional practices.
3. Develop optimum postharvest training package (post-harvest management manual, demonstration posters, etc) that describe best postharvest practices and addresses all handling stages starting from harvesting, precooling after harvest, cleaning and disinfecting, sorting or grading, packaging, and storage.
4. Conduct at least two stakeholders’ consultation and validation workshops.
5. The training package must address the requisite knowledge and experience in processing harvested products, reduce product losses, enhance produce quality, and preserve the nutritional value.
6. The training package should address post-harvest management and the prevention of post-harvest losses including quantitative loses, qualitative loses, nutritional value loses, germinative loses and economic loses.
7. Liaise with the relevant government ministries, academia and the local cooperatives to understand the capacity needs for harvesting and the preservation of the nutritional value of the produce.
8. Build the capacity of 12 community gardening groups on harvesting and post harvesting management and the production of a healthy diets.
9. While preparing training materials, the literacy level, local language and knowledge base of target audience must be taken into account.

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

1. 2-3 years’ experience of working in nutrition and livelihood Projects in a humanitarian context
   preferably related to agriculture.
2. A degree in agronomy, crop science, agricultural economics, agricultural systems and
   management, agribusiness or other related fields.
3. Experience in conducting literature review of existing materials and an appraisal of the available methods for processing harvested products.
4. Experience in developing a standardized, context-specific training package on appropriate methods for processing harvested products and other nutritional practices.
5. Experience in developing optimum postharvest training package (post-harvest management manual, demonstration posters, etc).
6. Experience liaising with relevant government ministries, academia and local cooperatives to understand the capacity needs for harvesting and preservation of nutritional value of the produce.
7. Overall good knowledge of geography, local population and local language in the areas of operational interests.
8. Competencies in all computer-related tasks including Word, Excel, and Outlook
9. Good understanding of community participation, and very good ability to communicate with beneficiaries.
10. Fluency in Somali and English both spoken and writing added advantage.
