Organisational Setting and Reporting
This position in located within the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and is based in Garoowe. The Senior Political Affairs Officer reports to the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), through the Chief of Staff (COS) with additional reporting line to the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General RC/HC (DSRSG RC/HC).
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Senior Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in political science, international relations, social science, economics, law, public administration, or related field. A first-level university degree in any of these fields, in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
Extensive experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting is required. Experience working in a United Nations common system field operation (inclusive of peacekeeping, political missions and UN agencies, funds, and programmes) or similar international or non-governmental organization in a conflict or post-conflict setting is desirable Experience managing a team is desirable. Experience working in or on the Horn of Africa on political issues is desirable. Experience facilitating multi-stakeholder processes in a peace consolidation or conflict setting is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of the other is an advantage.
