Overall Purpose of the role:

Under the direct supervision of the WASH Officer for Mogadishu field office, the temporary hygiene promoters will directly be involved in the day to day implementation of the WASH activities as part of the COVID-19 outbreak response to effectively prevent and contain the spread of the disease. He/she will work closely with communities for the establishment of WASH and sanitation facilities and promotion of recommended hygiene and sanitation practices in communities through HH visits and mass campaign.

The overall purpose of the position is to contribute to health and Sanitation improvements geared towards reduced Covid19 transmissions and mitigate risks though improved access to sustainable WASH services to IDPs and other target beneficiaries.

Responsibilities:

Undertake hygiene promotion through the use of standard methodologies such as PHAST and CHAST and make use of IEC materials developed by DRC or the WASH Cluster – Somalia

Help plan and conduct activities with the community to reduce WASH-related risks

Conduct mass campaign and House hold visits to sensitize the target population

Ensure proper distribution of the IEC and hygiene materials in the community

Attain knowledge and disseminate of awareness on the COVID-19 and share to the camp committee, IDPs and host community.

Collect and record data on routine activities and share with Supervisor.

Participate in the design and data collection during KAP surveys and baseline/needs assessments, and follow-up assessments.

Act as a link between the community leaders, the community and other stakeholders in the area.

Help identify key hygiene practices to be addressed and participate in carrying out appropriate activities to promote safe practices.

Support to water committees, sanitation committees and other community groups.

Take lead in organizing and carrying out hygiene promotion sessions and campaigns.

Conduct beneficiary registration and data entry and ensure the quality of the data entry with proper documentation and also carry out distribution of hygiene kits to the beneficiaries.

Participate in community based solid waste management initiatives and to train communities on good hygiene and sanitation practices.

Mobilize the community to participate in the project and encourage all groups to participate in the project.

Be a good steward by ensuring that project materials and resources are used effectively.

Mainstream cross cutting issues such as protection, gender, and environment are addressed and in the project.

Ensure that the vulnerable people also benefit from the project.

Report on the hygiene/health situation of the target population daily using available records.

Any other tasks assigned by supervisor.

Education, experience & technical competencies

Must have at least Secondary school certificate

Able to speak and write Somali language

Past experiences on Hygiene promotion with INGOs

Strong communication skills.

Good listening skills.

Diplomacy, tact, and negotiating skills.

Literacy, numeracy, and record keeping skills are essential.

Experience in utilizing technology tools and also possess the ability to use computer soft wares e.g. MS-Excel

Ability to work independently as well as an effective team player.

Willing to stay in the project areas for 8 working hours is an obligation.

Knowledge of local context is added advantage

Must be fluent in local language (Somali)

Reporting to:        WASH Team Leader

Duration:              6 Months

 Contract:              This position is graded as Band NM – I2 for qualified national staff and the terms of employment will be in accordance with DRC terms for national staff.
